Crowds turn out as Lanark lights up for Christmas and market returns to town

Crowds of people gathered in Lanark as the town was illuminated with Christmas lights and the annual market made its return. The festive spirit was palpable as families enjoyed the live entertainment provided by the SoundSational Choir and MacBusted before Santa’s arrival.

Organised by South Lanarkshire Council, the event kicked off with activities starting at 2 pm to keep everyone entertained until the town was aglow at 5 pm. The streets of Lanark and St Nicholas’ Church dazzled as the lights were switched on, marking the official start of the holiday season. Alongside the lighting ceremony, the popular Lanark Christmas Market opened with more than 70 stalls lining the High Street, offering a variety of gifts and treats for visitors.

Antonia Pompa, the BID Manager at Discover Lanark, shared her excitement about the event, praising the beautiful lights and the bustling market. She highlighted the festive atmosphere in town and the success of the day, with both the market and local shops bustling with activity. The presence of Santa, along with local performance groups and musical acts, added to the cheerful ambiance of the occasion.

As the festivities continue, the town anticipates the upcoming Illuminated Lanimer Parade on November 22 and late-night shopping opportunities. The Lanark Christmas Pop-Up Market, scheduled for December 7, will showcase offerings from over 30 local artisans. Families can also look forward to two Santa Saturdays on December 14 and 21 at the Tolbooth, featuring activities like storytelling and crafts.
