Three men have been released without charge following the discovery of a “suspicious item” in Glasgow. Police received a report of a potential suspicious item at the station, prompting a swift response from emergency services in the city center around 1.10 pm.
Authorities contacted the bomb squad, which carried out a controlled explosion late on Wednesday night. Thankfully, after a thorough assessment, it was confirmed that there was nothing suspicious found. Earlier in the day, three men were arrested in connection with “possession of offensive weapons,” but they have since been released without charge.
Superintendent Derrick Johnston emphasized that the initial report was taken seriously, leading to the closure of the surrounding area and a cordon being put in place as a precautionary measure. The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team conducted the controlled explosion following an assessment to ensure the safety of nearby gas mains and local train lines. Fortunately, the item was deemed harmless, posing no risk to the public.
The evacuation extended to the bus station, surrounding buildings such as Glasgow Caledonian University, and even a section of the M8 motorway was closed temporarily. Trains at Queen Street were halted as a safety precaution during the controlled explosion. Thankfully, all areas were reopened by 9.45 pm, with Superintendent Johnston expressing gratitude to the public for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
