Two lionesses, Luna and Plusza, have recently completed a remarkable journey from a war-torn area in Ukraine to their new home at Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder, West Lothian. The four-year-old lionesses were rescued from a conflict zone in eastern Ukraine in 2022, where they were heavily affected by shelling. Following their rescue, Luna and Plusza were cared for by a private owner before being moved through Kyiv to a zoo in Poland for medical treatment. They then made their way to Scotland via Belgium, finally reaching the safety of Five Sisters Zoo on Wednesday night.
At Five Sisters Zoo, Luna and Plusza will enjoy a purpose-built habitat that has been tailored to provide them with the optimal conditions for recovery after their traumatic experiences. The zoo officials express that this marks a significant moment in the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and rehabilitation. Gary Curran, the Head of carnivores at the zoo, emphasised their dedication to giving these lionesses a chance for a peaceful life and highlighted the team’s readiness to provide the necessary care and support for Luna and Plusza.
This rescue mission adds to the legacy of Five Sisters Zoo, which previously welcomed four lions rescued from a travelling circus in October 2015. In an effort to support the lionesses’ rehabilitation, the zoo is allowing visitors to make donations to contribute to the animals’ well-being and veterinary care. This new development comes as the zoo commemorates nine years since rescuing its first pride of lions in 2015, with Skinny being the sole surviving member of that initial group.
In conclusion, the arrival of Luna and Plusza at Five Sisters Zoo not only signifies a remarkable journey to safety but also showcases the zoo’s ongoing mission to rescue and care for animals in need. Their story serves as a testament to the dedication of the zoo to provide a second chance at life for these majestic creatures and continues to inspire visitors to support their meaningful work.
