Drug dealer avoids jail after police apprehend him for unconventional driving route in Paisley
Thomas Barclay, a drug dealer, was recently apprehended by the authorities in Paisley after they observed him taking an “unusual route” through the streets. The incident unfolded on April 29 last year when police officers noted Barclay driving his BMW in a manner that suggested he was unfamiliar with the area. Upon stopping him for a routine check, they noticed his extreme nervousness and profuse sweating. A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered incriminating evidence on his mobile phone, linking him to the supply of cocaine.
During the court hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court, it was revealed that the police suspected Barclay’s involvement in drug activities after he drove through various streets in a suspicious manner. Prosecutors detailed how the officers stopped his vehicle and discovered a zip lock bag containing cocaine in the footwell, along with a significant amount of cash and multiple mobile phones. Messages retrieved from Barclay’s phone indicated his participation in drug trafficking, including references to a ‘menu’ of drugs and drivers being available for deliveries over the weekend.
Barclay’s defence agent explained to the court that his client had turned to alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism for personal losses and financial troubles. Despite the seriousness of the offences, Sheriff Amel Elfallah opted to sentence Barclay to 90 hours of unpaid work and 12 months of supervision by the social work department, avoiding a custodial sentence by a narrow margin.
Barclay’s partner at the time, Natalie Sloan, who was also in the vehicle during the arrest, had her not guilty plea accepted by the Crown. The judge’s decision to spare Barclay from jail reflects the court’s stance on drug-related crimes, emphasizing the need for individuals to abstain from illegal activities.
