A Rangers-supporting nurse, Rona Goodall, from Prestonpans, East Lothian, has undertaken a remarkable challenge to support a friend’s toddler battling a devastating illness. When Rona learned that her old student pal’s son, two-year-old Tommy Quinn, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, she was determined to help in any way possible. Despite being a forensic psychiatric nurse, Rona decided to walk 5k every day for two months, wearing a Celtic jersey in honour of little Tommy who is a big fan of the club.
Tommy, from Bishopbriggs, Dunbartonshire, was diagnosed at Easter with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. His parents, David and Nicole Quinn, were left devastated by the news and described the whirlwind of emotions and challenges they faced following the diagnosis. Tommy underwent intensive chemotherapy treatments and a stem cell transplant as part of a clinical trial to fight the disease. The Quinn family is also fundraising for potential future treatments, including a clinical trial in Barcelona.
Rona’s fundraising efforts have garnered £3,290 so far, which will be used to assist with Tommy’s ongoing medical needs. Despite the physical and emotional challenges of her daily walks in a Celtic jersey, Rona remained committed to supporting Tommy and his family. She completed her final 5k walk with Tommy by her side, meeting him in person for the first time.
During her fundraising campaign, Rona faced some criticism and challenges, especially on the day of the Old Firm match between Rangers and Celtic. However, she persevered, knowing that it was a small sacrifice compared to what Tommy was enduring.
