A blind father is preparing to participate in the upcoming Great Scottish Run with his young son by his side to guide him through the race, marking a decade since his tragic loss of sight. Jay Cruz Semple, 45, hailing from Knightwood in Glasgow, lost his vision ten years ago due to a rare genetic condition known as Choroideremia, which primarily affects males and leads to progressive vision impairment. The devoted father aims to raise funds for a private treatment that offers a glimmer of hope to potentially restore his ability to see his 11-year-old son, Tyler-James, once again.
Tyler-James has been by his father’s side since a young age, serving as his running partner and guide. They have shared countless runs, with Tyler-James stepping in as Jay’s running companion even before his sight began deteriorating. Together, they have participated in Parkruns and joined the local running group, Knightwood Harriers. Jay expressed his immense pride in his son, highlighting Tyler-James’ indispensable role in both their sporting pursuits and daily activities. Jay shared, “I’m very proud of Tyler-James. He helps me with many things, like going shopping, getting to places and crossing the road. Without my wee boy, I’m stuck, to be honest.”
While Jay acknowledges Tyler-James’ achievements in martial arts, including winning numerous medals in national competitions, he longs to witness his son’s victories and milestones with his own eyes. Notably, Jay has been exploring various treatments for his sight loss condition, inspired by promising research findings on oxygen therapy. He remains optimistic about the possibility of partially restoring his vision to witness significant moments, such as Tyler-James transitioning to high school next year.
Despite the lack of a definitive cure for his condition thus far, Jay’s determination to explore alternative treatments signifies his unwavering hope to regain his vision and witness his son’s growth and achievements. Tyler-James continues to provide invaluable support to his father, not only in their shared love for sports but also in navigating daily life challenges. Their bond exemplifies resilience, mutual aid, and unwavering familial love amidst adversity.
To support Jay and Tyler-James in their fundraising efforts, donations can be made through their fundraiser. Their story is a testament to the power of determination, familial support, and the enduring hope for a brighter future despite life’s challenges.
