Scots man feared for life after stag plunged antlers into thigh as he attempted rescue

A Scottish man was left in fear for his life after a stag attacked him, plunging its antlers into his thigh as he attempted a rescue mission. Glen Wilkinson, 56, was walking his dogs in his seven-acre garden in rural Kishorn when the incident occurred. On a typical morning on November 14, Glen let his dogs out to play when he noticed them gathering in one corner of his garden where a highland stag was tangled in his fencing.

Glen approached the stag in an attempt to free it and prevent any further injury, but the stag charged at him, knocking him to the ground and driving its antler into his thigh. Glen had to wrestle with the six-foot animal, holding onto its antlers to avoid further harm, until his friend Martin Whitehead arrived to cut the fencing and free the stag, which then escaped. Glen was left in a pool of blood and was rushed to Broadford Hospital on the Isle of Skye, where he received 10 stitches for a seven-centimetre gash on his leg.

Reflecting on the incident, Glen mentioned that stags often ventured into his garden without any issues in the past, but this particular one got caught in the fencing, leading to the unfortunate confrontation. Despite the ordeal, Glen is now on the path to recovery and mentioned that he has learned not to intervene when a stag is tangled to avoid similar situations in the future.

Glen’s daughter drove him to the hospital for treatment, where he received stitches for a wound caused by the stag’s antler. Glen expressed relief that the incident did not result in more severe injuries but acknowledged the importance of being cautious when dealing with wildlife encounters.

In summary, Glen Wilkinson’s harrowing experience with the stag serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife interactions, even in familiar surroundings. His quick thinking and bravery in the face of danger, along with the timely assistance from his friend, highlight the importance of staying calm and seeking help in such situations. Glen’s story is a testament to the resilience and strength required to overcome unexpected challenges and emerge stronger on the other side.
