Sex workers in eastern Congo’s Kamituga town are facing significant challenges due to the ongoing mpox outbreak, but many feel they have no choice but to continue working to support themselves and their families. Among them is Sifa Kunguja, a 40-year-old sex worker who recently recovered from mpox but is still struggling to attract clients due to fear and stigma associated with the virus. Despite the risks involved, Kunguja expressed, “If I don’t work, I won’t have money for my children.”
The outbreak has hit the estimated 40,000 sex workers in Kamituga particularly hard, with doctors reporting that around 80% of cases in the area have been transmitted sexually. This poses a threat to both the health and livelihoods of sex workers, who face challenges in accessing medical care due to legal repercussions and fear of violence. The lack of resources and awareness campaigns in the region has further exacerbated the situation.
Local health officials are calling for measures to curb the spread of mpox, such as closing nightclubs and mines and compensating sex workers for lost income. However, some officials argue that the onus is on sex workers to protect themselves. The sex industry plays a significant role in Kamituga’s economy, with miners forming a large portion of the clientele.
Despite the risks posed by mpox, sex workers like Kunguja have highlighted the lack of access to condoms and information as key challenges. Health experts emphasise the importance of educating sex workers and miners on preventive measures and ensuring their involvement in outreach programmes. Efforts are also being made to improve safety measures in mines, where unsanitary conditions could contribute to the virus’s spread.
