An RAF officer shared a harrowing account of a horrifying crash at an airfield in Scotland that left him with severe injuries. Iain Bright, aged 58, had a mere five seconds to respond when his plane’s engine failed just after takeoff, resulting in a terrifying 100ft plunge towards the ground. The flight lieutenant was at the controls of a small aircraft that shattered upon impact at Easterton airfield near Elgin in July 2021. Escaping a potentially fatal collision with a grassy mound, Iain emerged from the wreckage with two broken ankles, four fractured ribs, a partially collapsed lung, internal bleeding, and two shattered vertebrae in his back.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Iain recounted, “The engine just quit, which meant I went from max power to nothing with no warning.” He vividly described the imminent danger, stating, “I knew if I hit it the impact would kill me.” Despite being initially knocked unconscious by the crash, Iain managed to alert his friend on-site, who then called for help. The aftermath revealed a scene of destruction, with the front of the aircraft torn apart and debris scattered across the airfield.
Upon regaining consciousness, Iain found himself amidst the chaos, with injuries visible, including a shard of glass lodged in his chin from the shattered windscreen. As emergency crews, including an air ambulance, rushed to his aid within minutes, Iain was swiftly airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for urgent medical care. He expressed gratitude towards the air rescue teams for their prompt and professional response, acknowledging their crucial role in his timely transport to the trauma unit.
Enduring a challenging three-year recovery journey, Iain spent weeks in the hospital undergoing extensive treatment, including surgeries to rebuild his ankles with metal fixtures. Despite the physical and emotional toll of the ordeal, Iain’s resilience shone through as he later embarked on a fundraising initiative, completing a 100-mile walking challenge and raising £1,500 for the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance.
