Disgraced nurse Lucy Letby has been linked to a “drawer of doom” containing information connecting her to multiple baby murders, leading to her life imprisonment with a whole-life order. The nursing director at the hospital where Letby worked revealed during an inquiry that concerns about Letby’s actions were not thoroughly investigated. Alison Kelly, the director of nursing at the Countess of Chester hospital during Letby’s time there, disclosed that despite warnings from consultant paediatricians about Letby potentially harming babies, the police were not called in until a year later, after reviews were commissioned due to increased mortality rates on the unit. Letby, convicted of murdering and attempting to murder infants between June 2015 and June 2016, had been moved to an administrative role following suspicions raised by medical staff.
Kelly expressed regret over not taking decisive action and stated that decisions were made with good intentions. She acknowledged being informed about the concerns raised by medical staff, including references to a “drawer of doom” containing troubling information related to Letby. Kelly admitted that there was a lack of concrete evidence linking Letby to the crimes, despite reports of unusual deaths and concerns about her shift patterns coinciding with deaths on the ward. She highlighted the challenges in balancing clinical observations with Letby’s reputation among her colleagues.
The inquiry also explored the strained relationships between medical professionals at the hospital, with Kelly admitting to a breakdown in trust between doctors and nurses.
