An elderly woman in Massachusetts, Dinora Cardoso, had to undergo a surgical procedure to be removed from a mattress infested with cockroaches, bedbugs, and faeces before tragically passing away in hospital two days later. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office revealed shocking details of neglect and abuse in the case, stating that Dinora, aged 79, had to be separated from the mattress she was stuck to. She succumbed to necrotising fasciitis, a severe flesh-eating disease, and sepsis caused by infected ulcers following the ordeal.
Charges of manslaughter, caregiver neglect of an elder, larceny, and Medicaid fraud have been brought against Dinora’s daughter Eva Fontes Cardoso, aged 53, granddaughter Kayla Cardoso, aged 31, and Lisa Hamilton, aged 64, in connection with Dinora’s death. First responders had originally been called to Dinora’s residence on May 17, 2023, after an ambulance request from Eva, but were unable to separate her from the mattress. Shockingly, Eva had received a substantial sum of money for purportedly caring for her mother, yet Dinora’s diabetes was left unchecked and she was neglected for weeks.
Further revelations surfaced that Hamilton, a registered nurse, had reported just a week before the emergency call that Dinora was in good condition, well-cared for, and her diabetes well-controlled, with no mention of the appalling living conditions. The three accused individuals are also facing allegations of fraud for billing MassHealth for services not rendered, including services supposedly provided while Dinora was hospitalised and even after her demise. Eva Cardoso, in particular, received over $140,000 for her personal care of Dinora.
Contrary to Hamilton’s report, records from EMTs and the hospital indicated that Dinora had uncontrolled diabetes and the level of insect infestation observed would have taken weeks to develop. The defendants are scheduled to appear in Brockton Superior Court for a pre-trial hearing on January 15 regarding the shocking case.
