A convicted killer was back in court this week after being caught carrying a knife on a Wishaw street. Kevin Dunn attracted police officers’ attention with his covered face and hidden logos on his clothing using duct tape. Dunn, now 44, admitted to possessing a knife unlawfully on Shand Street, Wishaw, on February 16. The court heard that Dunn was sensitive about his murder conviction and was trying to conceal his identity. In 1997, Dunn was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 17 for the murder of another youth in Craigneuk.
Aga Mathieson, the prosecutor in the case, mentioned that police officers noticed Dunn’s suspicious behaviour while on patrol at around 10pm. They found a kitchen knife in his possession after conducting a search. Dunn’s defence lawyer, Matthew McGovern, explained that Dunn had used the knife to open a box and had simply forgotten about it when he left his house to visit a chip shop. Despite the circumstances, Sheriff Linda Nicolson acknowledged that Dunn’s previous conviction made the matter more serious.
Sheriff Nicolson sentenced Dunn to 18 months in jail, but the term was backdated to his arrest in February, making him eligible for immediate release under early release rules. Dunn had previously been at liberty for five years without any issues with the police. The court recognized that Dunn came from a supportive family but found himself in a regrettable situation. Dunn’s lawyer highlighted his sensitivity towards his past conviction, explaining his actions to conceal his identity to avoid being identified.
