A woman was fined £380 at Airdrie Sheriff Court this week after hitting another female with a golf club following an argument on social media. Caitlin Lees, 24, of Plains, admitted to assaulting the woman in Affric Avenue on February 21. The court heard that the victim had gone to Lees’ home after both had exchanged messages online. Despite the victim’s aggressive behaviour, which was acknowledged by the prosecution, Lees engaged in a physical altercation with the woman. During the fight, Lees struck the other woman once on the leg with a golf club, causing bruising. The allegations of further violence, including punching, knocking to the ground, and kicking, were dropped.
In her defence, Lees’ lawyer, John Paul Gallacher, described her reaction to the woman’s aggression as “unacceptable.” He highlighted that his client had a limited criminal record and had been emotionally impacted by family bereavements in recent years. Sheriff Tony McGlennan expressed disapproval of the victim’s decision to visit Lees’ house, but also admonished Lees for taking matters into her own hands. Ultimately, Sheriff McGlennan imposed a fine on Lees, stating that the charge had been significantly reduced.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of escalating conflicts from social media platforms to real-life confrontations. It underscores the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful and lawful means, rather than resorting to physical violence.ersistent communication and negativity can quickly spiral out of control and lead to irreversible harm. It is crucial for individuals to exercise restraint and seek help from authorities or mediators to address conflicts effectively.
In conclusion, the incident involving Caitlin Lees highlights the dangers of allowing online disputes to escalate into physical altercations. It serves as a reminder of the need for responsible and respectful communication, both online and offline, to prevent such incidents from occurring. Resolving conflicts peacefully and seeking support when needed can help avoid potentially harmful and unlawful actions.
