Bonhill Toddler Honored as Young Heart Hero After Successful Open Heart Surgery

A courageous toddler from Bonhill has been named a Young Heart Hero for displaying remarkable strength and courage after undergoing open-heart surgery at only four weeks old. Two-year-old Teddy McPhee was diagnosed with aortic stenosis shortly after his birth in August 2022, a condition that restricts normal blood flow to the heart due to a narrow aortic valve.

During the surgery to correct this condition, one of Teddy’s arteries was accidentally torn, leading specialists at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to perform the Ross Procedure – a complex open-heart surgery involving the replacement of the aortic valve with a donor valve. Teddy is believed to be one of the youngest infants in the country to have undergone this procedure, which ultimately proved successful, allowing him to lead a happy and active life alongside his older brothers, Robson and Bradley.

Recently, Teddy was honoured at The British Heart Foundation (BHF) Young Heart Hero Awards, where he joined 19 other children from across Britain in celebrating stories of resilience and hope. His mother, Gillian, shared the emotional journey of Teddy’s diagnosis and treatment, highlighting moments of fear and uncertainty as well as the overwhelming relief of his recovery.

Despite facing ongoing monitoring, Teddy is now a vibrant and energetic toddler, charming everyone around him with his infectious laughter and mischievous antics. Gillian, who has become a dedicated fundraiser for the BHF, emphasises the importance of raising awareness about heart conditions in children, reflecting on her family’s newfound understanding of the impact of such conditions.

David McColgan, Head of BHF Scotland, commended Teddy and his family for their unwavering support for the charity and their commitment to raising awareness about heart health. As the festive season approaches, the British Heart Foundation encourages donations to support its vital research into heart and circulatory diseases.

In a heartwarming display of courage and resilience, Teddy McPhee’s inspiring journey serves as a beacon of hope and strength for all those facing similar challenges in their lives.
