A masked thug brandishing a knife threatened a man after being asked to pick up a discarded wine bottle, a court has heard. Martin McKenzie, 23, from Coatbridge, along with his friends, had been gathered near a block of flats when the incident occurred. McKenzie appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court facing charges of threatening or abusive behaviour and carrying a knife in Ash Road, Cumbernauld, on May 13 last year while on bail.
According to Kevin Morrow, the prosecutor, a woman spotted McKenzie and his companions outside her top-floor flat, seemingly intoxicated. The woman witnessed one of the group members throwing a Buckfast bottle to the ground and asked them to pick it up, asserting that it was not their street. Subsequently, McKenzie, upon being confronted by the woman to leave the area, covered his head with a balaclava.
Morrow revealed in court that when a neighbour came out in response to the woman’s plea, McKenzie drew a knife and pointed it at the man, threatening to stab him. Fortunately, McKenzie did not physically harm anyone and was eventually persuaded by his group to depart. The police later arrested McKenzie in a wooded area.
McKenzie had just finished serving a 16-month prison sentence for assaulting a man with bleach in Coatbridge. Simon Gilmour, McKenzie’s defence agent, mentioned that McKenzie is currently fulfilling an unpaid community work obligation as part of a post-release supervision order related to another case. Sheriff Tony McGlennan deferred McKenzie’s sentencing until January for further background reports, all the while maintaining bail but cautioning McKenzie that incarceration remains a likely outcome due to the seriousness of the offence and his criminal record.
