A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militants has officially begun for a 60-day period, with both sides retreating from southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed the ceasefire, viewing it as a means to isolate Hamas in Gaza and refocus on countering Iran’s support for both Hamas and Hezbollah. Foreign Secretary David Lammy welcomed the agreement, calling for it to mark a turning point towards enduring peace in the Middle East. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasised the significance of the ceasefire in enabling civilians on both sides to return safely to their homes and cease the violence.
