A mother who neglected her child by hiding her in a drawer under her bed for three years has been sentenced to jail. The shocking discovery was made at the family home in Chesire, where the child, who was almost three years old, was found with matted hair, deformities, and rashes. The woman, whose identity is protected, admitted to child cruelty in Chester Crown Court.
The court heard that the mother concealed the child from her siblings and her partner by keeping her in a drawer under her bed. The Honorary Recorder of Chester Judge Steven Everett condemned her actions, stating that she deprived the girl of love, attention, proper care, and medical help. He described the child as an intelligent girl slowly emerging from a traumatic experience.
The child, who had a developmental age of just 0-10 months when taken to hospital, was malnourished and dehydrated. The court was told that the child was left alone in the drawer while the mother tended to her other children, went to work, and even stayed with relatives over Christmas. The child’s existence only came to light when the mother’s partner stumbled upon her one morning.
Social workers and police officers involved in the case were deeply affected by the child’s condition and the circumstances surrounding her neglect. The child’s foster carer spoke of the heartbreaking discovery that the child did not even know her own name. The woman pleaded guilty to four counts of child cruelty, admitting to failure to seek medical care, abandonment, malnourishment, and neglect.
In her defence, the woman cited mental health issues, an abusive relationship with the child’s father, and the impact of Covid lockdown. Despite these factors, the court found her actions to be inexcusable. The Crown Prosecution Service stressed the importance of holding the woman accountable for her actions and expressed hope for the child’s recovery and future well-being.
