Tom Tugendhat criticises Robert Jenrick for using video of deceased friend in false claim on UK special forces
Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat has called out his party colleague, Robert Jenrick, for featuring footage of a deceased friend, a Special Forces soldier, in a video suggesting that British special forces are choosing to kill terrorists rather than capture them. The video was part of Jenrick’s promotional campaign to become the next leader of the Conservative party.
In an appearance on Newsnight, Tugendhat expressed his dismay at the use of the video, explaining that it included scenes of a soldier who tragically passed away shortly after the footage was recorded. Tugendhat highlighted the unfairness of implicating someone who is no longer alive to defend themselves against the accusations being made.
Addressing the issue, Tugendhat stated, “What’s particularly upsetting is that video is using a piece of footage of some of the people I served with, one of who died shortly after that film was taken in an accident and is not able to defend himself against the allegation that is being effectively levelled against him.”
The clash between the two Tory politicians sheds light on the sensitivities surrounding the portrayal of military personnel and the ethical responsibilities of using such footage for political purposes. Tugendhat’s remarks underscore the importance of respecting the memory and honour of individuals who have served their country, especially when they are no longer able to speak for themselves.
