Shocking CCTV Footage Reveals Police Officer Caught Stealing from Lidl

In a shocking incident captured on CCTV, a police officer was caught stealing nuts, cheese, and treats from a supermarket. The footage shows PC Christopher Spence placing several items in his rucksack at Lidl but only paying for one item before exiting the store. The 44-year-old appeared before the Exeter Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to theft following the incident at Lidl in Bideford, north Devon on February 12. Spence was observed moving around the aisles collecting multiple items and concealing them in his bag. Despite this, he only scanned one item at the self-service checkout before leaving the premises. He even thanked a staff member on his way out, as reported by the Mirror.

Spence, who was off duty during the offence, has been suspended from duty since his arrest. He was sentenced to an 18-month community order, 150 hours of unpaid work, a £300 contribution towards prosecution costs within 12 months, a victim surcharge, and £30 compensation to the store. Superintendent Toby Davies, the Commander in North and West Devon of the Devon and Cornwall Police, issued an apology for Spence’s actions, emphasizing that such behaviour does not align with the values of the force. He reassured the community that this incident does not represent the integrity of the local officers and highlighted that such misconduct is rare. Davies pledged to maintain transparency, accountability, and to rebuild the public’s trust and confidence.

In the wake of the sentencing, misconduct proceedings within the force are underway for Spence. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding ethical standards in law enforcement to preserve public trust in the police. Such breaches of trust, while rare, can have a significant impact on the reputation and credibility of the entire police force.
