Producer of Sherlock Confirms Show’s Potential Return to BBC
Fans of the hit BBC show Sherlock will be thrilled to know that there is a possibility for a new series, as shared by the show’s producer. Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and Amanda Abbington, captivated audiences until its divisive fourth series conclusion in 2017.
At Amazon Prime Video’s Trailblazers event on Monday, producer Sue Vertue hinted at the show’s return by revealing that the show’s set is still being kept in storage. Vertue expressed her love for the show and stated, “There is a future for it, one day, maybe, if everyone wants to do it.” The decision to revive the show ultimately hinges on aligning all necessary elements, particularly getting the actors on board.
The iconic duo of Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Freeman as Doctor John Watson has left a lasting impression on viewers through the show’s 13 episodes, spanning four series and a special. While the majority of episodes were well-received, the dramatic death of Mary Watson, played by Abbington, in the series four premiere left long-time fans in shock.
“The Six Thatchers” episode saw Mary sacrificing herself to save Sherlock, leaving behind her husband, Watson, and their newborn. Abbington shared her thoughts on the twist, revealing that she had known about her character’s fate for some time and emphasised the opportunity it gave her as an actor to explore intense emotions.
Cumberbatch described the scene as “very upsetting” to film, highlighting the impact of losing such a pivotal character in a violent manner. The co-creator, Mark Gatiss, explained that while the decision to kill off Mary diverged from Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works, it felt like the right creative choice for the show’s narrative.
