Doctors have found that talking therapies and physical and mental rehabilitation may be more effective in treating Long Covid than drugs or diet, according to a new study. The research, published in The BMJ by scientists from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, suggests that treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and rehabilitation programmes could improve symptoms and aid recovery in patients with Long Covid.
The study analysed 24 trials involving 3,695 participants to assess various interventions for Long Covid. The findings indicated that CBT could reduce fatigue and improve cognitive function, while physical and mental health rehabilitation programmes could increase the proportion of patients experiencing recovery or significant improvements. However, the study did not find substantial evidence supporting the effectiveness of other interventions like medications, dietary supplements, or oxygen therapy.
Dr Daniel Munblit from King’s College London and Imperial College London emphasised the importance of addressing patient concerns and scepticism surrounding CBT and rehabilitation. He highlighted the need for open communication and patient education to ensure acceptance and adherence to these treatments. Additionally, Dr Margaret O’Hara from Long Covid Support stressed the necessity for research into disease-modifying interventions to help individuals with Long Covid regain their lives.
In a separate report by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, researchers revealed that Long Covid could double a patient’s cost to the healthcare system. Patients with long-term symptoms following a Covid-19 diagnosis were found to use health services significantly more than before, leading to increased GP visits, hospital admissions, and emergency care. With approximately 1.9 million individuals in the UK grappling with Long Covid, experts underscore the complexity and impact of the condition on healthcare resources.
The financial burden of Long Covid was further highlighted by a study from academics at University College London, showing that individuals with the condition incur higher annual costs to the health service. Dr Yi Mu from UCL’s Institute of Health Informatics pointed out the extensive healthcare needs of Long Covid patients, which strain health systems and escalate healthcare costs. Dr O’Hara reiterated that beyond economic implications, the human suffering endured by those with Long Covid is immeasurable.
