Scots dad gives daughter away at wedding before dying of cancer days later

A Scots father fulfilled his final wish by giving his daughter away on her wedding day just days before succumbing to cancer. John Bremner, who had been battling cancer, was determined to be present when his daughter Lori married her fiancé Brian Robertson. Originally planning to wed in Spain next year, Lori and Brian decided to bring their wedding forward due to John’s deteriorating health. Hospice chaplain Laura Gilmour organised an intimate wedding ceremony for the couple at Strathcarron Hospice on November 15. However, as John’s condition worsened, a blessing was arranged for the couple on November 3.

Lori expressed the importance of having her father at her wedding, stating, “It was really important for my dad – and for me – to bring it forward so he could be there for my special day.” Though John was unable to walk on the day of the wedding, he held Lori’s hand and gave her away in a touching moment. The wedding, held at the hospice, was made possible by the dedication and care of the nurses and staff, who ensured John could be part of the special day.

Laura, the hospice chaplain, orchestrated a beautiful service that honoured John’s wish to give his daughter away. Grateful for the support and love shown by the hospice team, Lori shared, “Without the team at Strathcarron I wouldn’t have had that moment with my dad. My whole family is so grateful for the respect and dignity shown to my dad and for helping make it the special day it was.”

The nurses went above and beyond, even creating a unique memento by taking John’s fingerprints and shaping them into a heart on a card for Lori. Despite the emotional day, the care and support provided were exceptional, leaving a lasting impact on Lori and her family. The loving gesture and efforts of the hospice team made the wedding a cherished memory for everyone involved.

In the face of adversity, the Bremner family found solace and joy in the compassionate care provided by the hospice staff, who ensured that John’s final wish was fulfilled with utmost respect and dignity. John’s presence at his daughter’s wedding, though bittersweet, symbolised love, strength, and the enduring bond between a father and his daughter.
