A Bellshill man has been sentenced to prison after being caught with child sex abuse images for a second time. Andrew Brailsford, 36, was found with 3,569 photos and 24 videos on his devices, containing graphic images of children aged between three years and 16. The Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Brailsford had previously avoided prison in 2019 when he admitted to downloading nearly 32,000 child sex abuse images. Despite being placed under social work supervision and ordered to carry out community work, Brailsford continued to offend.
Brailsford’s defence lawyer, Diarmid Bruce, highlighted his client’s difficulties throughout his life but emphasised that there had been no direct contact with children. Bruce suggested alternatives to custody, including participation in an intensive support programme recommended by social workers. However, Sheriff Colin Dunipace decided to jail Brailsford for a year and placed him back on the sex offenders’ register. The sheriff expressed concern over Brailsford’s repeated offenses despite previous interventions and stated that his duty is to protect young people from such harmful behaviour.
Regarding the sentencing, Sheriff Dunipace remarked on the seriousness of the case, especially considering Brailsford’s prior conviction. He stressed the court’s obligation to address such behavior firmly to safeguard children. The decision to imprison Brailsford was made in the interest of public safety and to deter future offenses.
