Generous Kirkcudbright Community Raises Over £60k for Lifeboat Station Upgrade
Residents and businesses in Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway, have come together to raise an impressive amount of over £60,000 towards a significant upgrade of the town’s lifeboat station.
The RNLI set a target for the volunteer crew to raise £50,000 for the upgrade work on the station at Torrs Point, originally constructed in 1892. The community’s tremendous effort has surpassed this target, with donations exceeding £60,000, and fundraising efforts are still ongoing as they head into the New Year.
May Brown, President of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright RNLI Fundraising Group, expressed delight and gratitude, stating, “The new boathouse will bring our facilities into the 21st century and give the volunteer crew the facilities they deserve. We are absolutely delighted and overwhelmed with all the support for our appeal so far.”
The fundraising campaign, initiated in June, aimed to raise £50,000 towards the total cost of £1.2 million. The extended station building will feature separate changing facilities and toilets for both men and women, a warm-up area for volunteers, and a dedicated workshop for maintaining the lifeboat.
Various individuals and organisations, including the Kirkcudbright Development Trust, Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities, and local choirs, have shown support for the fundraising campaign through events and donations. Volunteers themselves took on challenges like running marathons and swimming lengths of the local pool to contribute.
Jill Hepburn, Head of region for the RNLI in Scotland, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response to the appeal, emphasising that every penny raised will go towards providing the volunteers at Kirkcudbright RNLI with modern facilities in a new boathouse.
