A caregiver has pleaded guilty to assaulting a baby boy by repeatedly shaking him, resulting in 11 fractured bones. Jose Herreros, a 26-year-old care assistant, seized the nine-week-old child, lifted him up, and forcefully shook him at a residence in Newtongrange, Midlothian. The incident occurred between May 27 and 30, 2022, leaving the baby with severe injuries. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that the baby boy suffered 11 fractured bones to his ribs and legs due to Herreros’ actions. Fortunately, the child has since made a full recovery from his injuries.
Herreros admitted to assaulting the child, putting his life in danger, when he appeared in court. Prosecutors presented a written narration detailing the attack, stating that Herreros was caring for the baby while the mother was in the hospital. During a routine check by a health worker the following month, bruises on the child’s cheek were observed, leading to further medical assessment. Subsequent examinations revealed multiple fractures to the child’s ribs and legs, with doctors determining that the injuries were abusive in nature and required protection from potential harm.
Following the incident, the baby was placed in emergency foster care, and Herreros later contacted police and social services to confess to his actions. In a message to police, Herreros expressed remorse and requested an interview to discuss the incident. During an interview, he claimed the shaking was not done with great force. Sheriff Christopher Dickson released Herreros on bail pending sentencing in January for social work reports to be prepared.
