Dougall Baillie Associates, a prominent East Kilbride firm, is once again bolstering its talent pool with a new group of graduate apprentices (GAs). The 41-employee strong Dougall Baillie Associates (DBA), one of Scotland’s largest independent engineering consultancy firms, has introduced young individuals who will pursue a university degree over four years while gaining valuable professional experience. The firm acknowledges the strengths of traditional graduates but is increasingly leaning towards apprenticeships for the practical experience, work ethic, and workplace understanding they offer.
The apprenticeship programme at DBA is not only a pathway to academic achievement but also a key factor in staff retention, with apprentices statistically more likely to stay with the firm for five years compared to graduate-entry employees. Scott Macphail, the director of civil engineering at DBA, expressed his delight in welcoming two new apprentices, Kieran Ross, 18, and Jenny O’Brien, 19, to the team. Kieran, from East Kilbride, is studying civil engineering, while Jenny, from Blantyre, is specialising in structural engineering.
The apprentices, who possess the same academic qualifications as university students, will undertake their studies at Strathclyde University alongside their employment at DBA. Scott Macphail highlighted the benefits of the GA route, citing the opportunity for hands-on learning, team collaboration, and a structured career path towards achieving Chartership status. The new apprentices are already making positive contributions to the firm, showcasing their enthusiasm and capability in their respective fields.
Scott emphasised the value of the apprenticeship programme in building a talented team from the ground up and expressed his preference for hiring graduate apprentices over traditional graduates.
