Man who stabbed Scots mum to death in Australian home while high on drugs jailed for life

A man who fatally stabbed his Scottish mother while under the influence of drugs at their residence in Australia has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 20 years. Carol Ann Cameron, aged 63 and originally from Uphall, West Lothian, was the victim of the brutal attack carried out by her son, Callum Cameron, in August 2020. Carol, a dedicated cancer care nurse, had contacted emergency services due to concerns about her son’s drug overdose on DMT. During the trial at the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Callum, 31, admitted to manslaughter but denied intending to murder his mother, attributing his actions to drug-induced delirium. However, Judge Justice Joseph McGrath concluded that Callum was fully aware of his actions and convicted him of murder.

The court heard that an argument ensued between the mother and son when paramedics arrived at the scene, and Callum violently attacked Carol with a knife in the kitchen after refusing to accompany medical personnel. Despite her pleas for him to stop, Carol suffered 62 stab wounds across her body, leading to her tragic death. Following the incident, Callum was found by the police in a calm state with blood on his hands. Despite claims from his defence team that drug use had impaired his ability to form intent, the judge determined that Callum was indeed capable of intending to commit the crime.

Justice McGrath’s detailed 56-page judgement highlighted the brutality and intention behind the attack, emphasising the sustained and purposeful nature of Callum’s actions. Although the killing was not premeditated, the judge stated that Callum acted with clear intent during the violent assault. The trial, which involved complex medical evidence, proceeded without a jury to assess Callum’s mental state at the time of the murder. In a heart-wrenching statement released by Carol’s family following her untimely death, they described her as a cherished mother, partner, sister, and friend who had dedicated her career to cancer care. The family expressed profound devastation over the tragic loss of Carol.

In conclusion, the court’s verdict and sentencing in the case reflect the gravity of the crime committed by Callum Cameron against his own mother, Carol Ann Cameron. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drug abuse and the importance of seeking help and support for individuals struggling with substance addiction. It also underscores the critical role of the justice system in holding offenders accountable for their actions, especially in cases of heinous crimes such as murder within families. The legacy of Carol Ann Cameron lives on through the cherished memories of her loved ones, who continue to mourn her loss and honour her life and contributions to the community.
