An increase in the number of fatalities on roads in Perth and Kinross has been reported in the mid-year policing report presented to councillors. Between April 1 and September 30, six people lost their lives in road traffic incidents, as compared to four in the previous year. Additionally, 57 individuals suffered serious injuries during this six-month period, an increase from 37 in the same period last year. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded to 55 road traffic collisions where their assistance was required during this time frame.
Tragic incidents highlighted in the report included a motorcyclist’s death on the A822 at Amulree in May, a pedestrian fatality on the A9 Perth bypass in the same month, and a fatal crash involving a father and daughter on the A823 at Gleneagles in June. Recently, a Chinese tourist was sentenced for causing the death of a motorcyclist by driving on the wrong side of the A9. In September, a passenger lost their life in a crash on the B9099 near Stanley.
Despite the rise in serious accidents, police noted a decrease in speeding offences, attributing it partly to higher fuel costs. Chief Inspector Greg Burns acknowledged the positive impact of enforcement activities on driver behaviour but emphasized the need to maintain vigilance. Chief Superintendent Nicola Russell highlighted the focus on addressing driving behaviours that contribute to accidents, targeting issues such as dangerous driving, drink/drug driving, speeding, seatbelt usage, and mobile phone usage.
