Back to the Future star makes admission about Michael J Fox

Back to the Future Star Reveals Insights on Michael J Fox Following Eric Stoltz Departure

Lea Thompson, star of Back to the Future, recently opened up about her initial experience working with lead actor Michael J Fox. Thompson portrayed Lorraine Baines-McFly, the teenage version of the character who later becomes Marty McFly’s mother, played by Fox. Although Fox eventually made the role of Marty his own across the trilogy of films released from 1985 to 1990, he was initially unable to take on the role due to commitments with the hit sitcom Family Ties. In his place, the role went to Eric Stoltz, known for his roles in Mask and Pulp Fiction.

After filming several scenes, director Robert Zemeckis determined that Stoltz was not the right fit for the role. Screenwriter and producer Bob Gale revealed in 2015 that the comedy aspect of the film simply wasn’t working with Stoltz. Zemeckis and Gale were able to persuade the producer of Family Ties to allow Fox to shoot Back to the Future alongside his TV show’s schedule, resulting in reshoots of scenes that had already been filmed, including those featuring Thompson.

During a recent podcast, Thompson shared her thoughts on her early interactions with Fox. When asked if she hit it off with him right away, she responded, “Probably not because I was friends with Eric Stoltz, who had just gotten fired.” Thompson had previously worked with Stoltz on the 1984 film The Wild Life and would collaborate with him again on the 1987 movie Some Kind of Wonderful.

Christopher Lloyd, who portrayed Emmett “Doc” Brown in the film, expressed his confusion and described the set as feeling like a wake after Stoltz’s dismissal. However, both Lloyd and Thompson eventually developed a strong working relationship with Fox.

Reflecting on Fox’s performance for the film’s 30th anniversary in 2015, Thompson praised his comedic timing and ability to elevate the film’s tone. She commended him for knowing how to deliver laughs and keep the pace of the movie engaging.

Thompson’s candid revelations offer a behind-the-scenes look at the casting challenges and dynamics that shaped the beloved film franchise, providing fans with a deeper understanding of the intricate workings of one of cinema’s most iconic productions.
