Crow’s feet around the eyes could be an early warning sign of dementia

Crow’s feet around the eyes may serve as an early indicator of dementia, according to a recent study published in the Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy journal. The research, conducted in China, highlighted that individuals with wrinkles and signs of facial ageing were more likely to experience cognitive decline. Specifically, those with crow’s feet, which are fine lines around the eyes, faced a 2.5 times higher risk of developing dementia.

The study involved 200,000 participants and spanned over 12 years, with individuals aged around 64 at the start. Participants were asked to assess whether they appeared older or younger than their actual age. Over the study period, approximately 6,000 cases of dementia were recorded, revealing that those perceived as older than their age had a 61 percent increased likelihood of developing the condition. Furthermore, they were 23 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and 74 percent more likely to develop other types of dementia.

In the second part of the study, researchers analysed photos of 612 participants with an average age of 63 using computer technology to identify signs of ageing. The results showed a significant link between the presence of crow’s feet and cognitive impairment, with individuals displaying more of these wrinkles being 2.5 times more likely to experience impairment.

While the exact relationship between facial ageing and dementia remains unclear, researchers suggested that prolonged sun exposure could have detrimental effects on both skin health and cognitive function. Previous animal studies have indicated that skin ageing induced by UV radiation may impact the neuro-immune system, which plays a role in protecting brain cells.

The implications of this study suggest that assessing facial age, both subjectively and objectively, could potentially aid in identifying individuals at risk of cognitive decline or dementia. Early intervention strategies targeting these risk populations may be beneficial in mitigating the progression of the condition in older adults. Further research is needed to explore the correlation between facial ageing markers and dementia risk more comprehensively.

According to the NHS, symptoms of dementia include memory loss, difficulty concentrating, challenges in performing daily tasks, confusion about time and place, mood changes, and communication difficulties.
