A Scottish family has reached a significant fundraising milestone in honour of their son who tragically passed away from a brain tumour. Graham Mckie, from Milngavie, started experiencing severe headaches on Boxing Day in 2005. Following medical investigations, the 32-year-old was diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma, an inoperable and incurable brain tumour. Graham, a devoted supporter of Aberdeen and Manchester United, passed away in August 2006, surrounded by his devastated family.
Despite his illness, Graham faced his condition with courage and determination, never letting it affect his spirit. After Graham’s passing, his father Don McKie, along with his mother Rachel and their extended family, embarked on a tireless fundraising journey in memory of Graham. They have organised various events such as bake sales, silent auctions, and community fundraisers to collect donations for Brain Tumour Research.
Their efforts have paid off, with the family recently reaching an impressive fundraising milestone of £50,000 in Graham’s honour. Rachel expressed that their goal was to honour Graham by assisting others and contributing to vital research and support. Don highlighted that their ongoing dedication to fundraising is a tribute to Graham’s memory and emphasized the importance of continuing their efforts to bring hope to families facing similar challenges.
Moving forward, Brain Tumour Research is partnering with The Beatson to establish a new Centre of Excellence in Scotland, set to open in 2025. This centre will focus on accelerating research into glioblastoma (GBM) with the aim of advancing understanding and treatment of this aggressive form of brain tumour. Rachel shared that the Centre of Excellence signifies hope for future generations, and all their future fundraising endeavours will be dedicated to supporting this initiative in the search for a cure.
