Heartless reason mum kept secret baby hidden under bed for three years

A shocking case has emerged of a mother who kept her secret child hidden in a drawer under her bed for almost three years, citing a heartless reason for her actions. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, concealed the birth of her daughter from family and friends after giving birth to the baby with a cleft palate in 2020. The mother admitted to placing the child in a drawer in her divan bed and leaving her there for extended periods, returning only to feed her milky Weetabix through a syringe and change her nappies.

The mother’s neglect severely impacted the baby’s growth and development, as she was unable to crawl, walk, talk, or communicate. The child was discovered at almost three years old in a malnourished state with matted hair and a cleft palate. Social workers and police were alerted to the situation when a noisy child was heard by a visitor at the house. The child’s lack of care was described by witnesses as extreme neglect and cruelty, with the mother showing no remorse or emotion upon discovery.

Medical experts confirmed the child’s significant developmental delays and poor physical condition were a direct result of the neglect she endured. Following her rescue, the baby underwent surgery to address her cleft palate and began to show signs of progress. The mother pleaded guilty to four charges of child cruelty and was sentenced to seven years and six months’ imprisonment for her appalling actions.

The Crown Prosecution Service and social workers involved in the case expressed deep shock at the extent of the neglect and suffering the child endured. The case has left a lasting impact on everyone involved, with a hope that the child’s ongoing recovery will continue successfully.

In summary, this tragic story sheds light on the importance of vigilance and care for vulnerable children, emphasizing the severe consequences of neglect and abandonment. The resilience shown by the child in overcoming such extreme circumstances serves as a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for survival and healing.
