Common food in diet that ‘ages you faster’ and raises risk of dementia

A recent study has shed light on a common food item in our diets that could potentially age us faster and increase the risk of dementia. Type 2 diabetes, a condition affecting sugar processing in the body, is often associated with a high-sugar diet. However, new research has uncovered that it may also accelerate the ageing process. Heart disease and type 2 diabetes are already well-known complications linked to excessive sugar consumption, but Oxford University scholars have found another concerning connection – an increased risk of quicker ageing.

Earlier this year, researchers from Oxford University examined brain scans of 40,000 UK residents to explore factors contributing to dementia. Out of 161 identifiable factors, type 2 diabetes emerged as a significant risk, frequently influenced by diets rich in sugar. Professor Anderson Winkler from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley highlighted the importance of considering all modifiable risk factors together to assess their impact on brain health. The study identified diabetes, air pollution, and alcohol as the most harmful factors, even after accounting for age and gender.

Dementia encompasses a range of neurological conditions that severely affect cognitive functions, interfering with daily life and independence. Experts have pinpointed 15 major culprits contributing to brain decline, which include high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, body weight, and diabetes. Environmental pollution, sleep deprivation, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking were also flagged as significant threats. Professor Gwenaëlle Douaud, leading the research, emphasised the vulnerability of specific parts of the brain to diabetes, air pollution, and alcohol – common risk factors for dementia.

The study also revealed intriguing connections between brain health and genetic factors. Various genetic variations impacting a specific brain network were linked to cardiovascular diseases, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and a lesser-known blood group antigen system – the XG antigen system. Despite the risks posed by these factors in hastening dementia, they are considered modifiable, suggesting that making positive lifestyle changes can still benefit brain health.

In conclusion, maintaining a healthy diet low in sugar, avoiding environmental pollutants, moderating alcohol consumption, and prioritising quality sleep are important steps in reducing the risk of accelerated ageing and dementia. By addressing these modifiable risk factors, individuals can take proactive measures to safeguard their brain health and overall well-being.
