A mother uncovered a horrifying truth about her son’s ‘boyfriend’ after a friend innocently asked a question. Police were already investigating Mark Lee regarding another boy known as Boy 1 when they discovered a screenshot of a second boy, referred to as Boy 2, on Lee’s phone. The screenshot depicted Boy 2 in a school uniform, along with videos showing the two together with the caption ‘Mine’.
According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, Lee, a 21-year-old from Wythenshawe in Greater Manchester, messaged Boy 2’s mother on Facebook after the boy attempted to end their relationship. Lee admitted to meeting Boy 2 in person and lied about his age, claiming to be 17. The situation unfolded when police visited Lee’s mother’s residence to inform her that Lee had been grooming her son, revealing the extent of the abuse.
The mother of Boy 1 became suspicious after a conversation where Boy 1 mentioned his boyfriend was 17. Upon investigating, she found Lee to be older than he claimed, raising further concerns. Chat logs and images found on Boy 1’s phone indicated sexually explicit conversations and interactions with Lee, leading to Lee’s arrest and the discovery of indecent images on his phone.
During Lee’s trial, it was revealed that he had a history of sexual offences involving children and had breached court orders meant to prevent such behaviour. Lee was described as a ‘determined and manipulative’ paedophile by the judge and was sentenced to five years in prison, with an additional three-year probation period.
In response to the case, investigator Orla Lynch from GMP’s Sex Offender Management Unit stressed the importance of monitoring sex offenders in the community to prevent re-offending. She highlighted the team’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and swiftly addressing breaches to ensure offenders are brought to justice.
The harrowing ordeal faced by the victims and their families underscores the need for continued vigilance in protecting children from exploitation and abuse, emphasising the importance of robust enforcement measures and community support for those affected by such crimes.
