Romance scams have seen a significant increase, with warning signs to be vigilant for in order to protect oneself from falling victim to fraudsters. Santander UK has raised concern after nearly £4 million was reported stolen from its customers through romance scams in the past six months. Fraudulent individuals fabricate stories, promises, and crises to manipulate victims into sending them money.
Victims of romance scams ranged from 18 to 93 years old, indicating that individuals of all ages are at risk of being targeted. Between March and August this year, a total of £3,813,410 was lost to romance scams, reflecting a 27% increase compared to the previous half-year period. On average, Santander UK customers lost around £4,500 each.
To prevent falling prey to such deceit, there are early warning signs that individuals should be cautious of. One red flag is if someone professes love shortly after initiating online conversations. Simon Newman, CEO of the Online Dating and Discovery Association, advises being wary of individuals who express intense feelings or talk about a future together prematurely, as scammers often use emotional manipulation to accelerate relationships.
Moreover, scammers typically avoid face-to-face meetings to sustain their deception and prolong communication. Newman warns that repeated excuses for not meeting in person or video chatting should raise suspicions. Additionally, individuals should be cautious of those with peculiar or vague backgrounds, such as claiming to be in the military or constantly traveling for work.
Requesting financial assistance is another major warning sign for potential scams. Scammers may fabricate emergencies like a sick relative or a sudden job loss to solicit money. Newman emphasises never sending money to someone met online, especially via wire transfer or gift cards, which are difficult to trace. It is essential to verify individuals’ identities by conducting reverse image searches on profile pictures and being cautious of those with limited digital footprints.
