Louise Muldoon, 65, was initially misdiagnosed with torticollis, a condition that causes painful muscle spasms and a turned head, when she visited her GP at North Avenue Surgery in January 2020. Despite multiple appointments and visits to healthcare professionals, her family claims that medics failed to recognise the seriousness of her condition. It wasn’t until July 2020 that Louise was diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Sadly, Louise passed away in November 2020 after months of suffering.
Louise’s husband, Kevin, along with their daughters Clare and Deborah, felt that she had been let down by the healthcare system and that crucial signs were missed. Kevin took their concerns to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO) to investigate the failings in Louise’s care. Louise’s health deteriorated rapidly over the months leading up to her diagnosis, with her pain escalating to the point where she was suicidal. Despite being prescribed oral morphine, she found no relief.
Eventually, Louise was admitted to the hospital in July, where she was informed of her terminal illness and the limited options for treatment. She underwent a cervical occipital operation to alleviate her pain, but sadly, she passed away shortly after. Following her death, Kevin received apologies from both NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and North Avenue Surgery after complaints about the inadequate care Louise received.
