Scots Schoolgirl’s Leukaemia Journey Inspires Courageous Poem
Fearne Stewart, a brave schoolgirl from Blantyre who battled and survived acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, has become the inspiration behind an incredible poem about courage. Diagnosed with cancer of the white blood cells in April 2023 at the tender age of four, Fearne underwent chemotherapy treatment, leading to the loss of her beautiful long hair. Despite the challenges, Fearne adapted well and showed remarkable strength throughout her treatment journey.
Now in remission and on track to complete her chemotherapy in 2025, Fearne has not only started primary school but has also been chosen, along with four other children, to inspire a poem marking the launch of the next Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People Star Awards. These awards celebrate the bravery of children and young people facing cancer, with Fearne being one of the recipients earlier this year.
The poem, titled ‘Courage Looks Like Me’, was crafted by poet Joseph Coelho, who asked each child what courage meant to them before weaving their responses into a touching piece. Fearne’s depiction of courage as “the SWOOSH of a superhero making every villain flee” and “bouncy” reflects her charismatic spirit and determination in the face of adversity.
Fearne, in sharing her experience, expressed pride in receiving a star award and reflected on the significance of contributing to the heartfelt poem. She described bravery as a feeling of being “bouncy” yet nervous during hospital visits, highlighting her coping mechanism of taking a deep breath, counting to 10, and saying ‘go’ before treatments.
Joseph Coelho, touched by the children’s poetic expressions, commended their maturity and strength, acknowledging the depth of their experiences. Through ‘Courage Looks Like Me’, Fearne and her fellow young poets shed light on their resilience and vulnerabilities, offering a glimpse into their unique journeys of overcoming cancer.
Fearne’s participation in the AllTogether-1 clinical trial for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia underscores her commitment to advancing cancer research and treatment. Cancer Research UK emphasises the importance of recognising and celebrating the strength of all children facing cancer, encouraging nominations for the star awards to honour their courage.
As Fearne’s story continues to inspire hope and resilience, her journey serves as a poignant reminder of the remarkable courage exhibited by young cancer warriors nationwide.
