A five-year-old girl from Scotland is looking forward to spending Christmas at home with her family after enduring a challenging year that included 29 life-saving surgeries. Little Amber McRae, who hails from East Kilbride, suffers from a rare form of spina bifida and hydrocephalus, conditions that have required numerous surgeries to manage. Last Christmas, Amber was in the hospital for six weeks undergoing a series of surgeries, including a risky skull expansion procedure to relieve pressure in her head. Her mother, Leanne Belch, shared the difficulties they faced as a family during this time, with the uncertainty of whether Amber would survive the surgeries looming over them.
Leanne described the harrowing experience of seeing her daughter post-surgery, with tubes coming out of her, a shaved head, and a large incision that left Amber unrecognisable to herself. The recovery process was tough for Amber, causing her a lot of pain and distress. Despite the challenges they faced last Christmas, Leanne is grateful that this year, they will be able to celebrate the festive season together as a family.
