Bed blocking in Dumfries and Galloway hits lowest level for more than two years

Bed blocking in Dumfries and Galloway has reached its lowest level in over two years, according to new data from Public Health Scotland. In October, there was an average of 81 people in hospital each day due to delayed discharge, marking a decrease of 10 from the previous month and the lowest figure since May 2022.

During October, a total of 2,511 bed days were lost in Dumfries and Galloway as a result of delayed discharge. This situation occurs when individuals remain in hospital despite being medically fit to leave, usually due to a lack of appropriate care arrangements. The number of bed days lost was down from September’s figure of 2,728 and the lowest since June 2022 when 2,500 bed days were lost.

An NHS Dumfries and Galloway spokesperson mentioned that significant efforts have been made to ensure the safe and prompt discharge of patients who no longer require hospital care. Initiatives like Discharge Without Delay and Discharge to Assess have been implemented to support this goal. Discharge to Assess involves conducting a baseline assessment of patients in the hospital, with a more comprehensive assessment taking place within 72 hours post-discharge at their residence, enabling a more accurate identification of needs compared to an assessment in a hospital setting.

Despite winter pressures leading to a busy healthcare system and potential fluctuations in discharge numbers, healthcare staff have successfully implemented new strategies to navigate this demanding period. The spokesperson expressed gratitude towards unpaid carers who play a vital role in supporting individuals following their discharge from hospital. Patients, families, and carers are encouraged to be prepared to leave the hospital as soon as discharge arrangements are finalized, allowing medical staff to focus on those in need of immediate assistance.
