Crowds in Paisley Take a Stand for Women’s Safety
In a powerful display of solidarity, hundreds of individuals gathered on Paisley High Street to participate in the ‘Reclaim the Night’ march, advocating for an end to violence against women and girls. The diverse group included local residents, students, activists, and councillors, all carrying placards and banners as they marched from the University of the West of Scotland. Leading the procession were two pipers, setting the tone for a somber yet empowering event.
The march culminated in Dunn Square, where attendees convened for a poignant memorial service. Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron laid a wreath, crafted by the Paisley Soroptimists, as a tribute to those who have tragically lost their lives to violence. The atmosphere was further uplifted by the soulful tunes performed by Starlight Rock Choir. Following the service, participants gathered at Paisley Town Hall for refreshments and reflection.
This annual event aligns with the United Nations’ global initiative, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and has been a fixture in Renfrewshire for nearly two decades. Organised by Renfrewshire Council’s community learning and development team, women and children first team, as well as various partners and support groups, the march serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight to eradicate gender-based violence.
Provost Lorraine Cameron emphasised the importance of creating a safe environment for all individuals, devoid of fear and threats. She underscored the necessity for societal change, rejecting the notion that women and girls must alter their behaviour for personal safety. Events like ‘Reclaim the Night’ resonate a powerful message that violence in any form is unacceptable and that every individual deserves protection from harm, regardless of their background.
