Former Scotland rugby union captain, Stuart Hogg, has been given a five-year non-harassment order and fined for breaching bail conditions. Hogg’s sentencing for abusing his estranged wife over a five-year period has been deferred until January 9. He admitted breaching bail by repeatedly contacting his ex-partner, Gillian Hogg, in June. This comes after Hogg previously pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse at Selkirk Sheriff Court.
During the proceedings at Jedburgh Sheriff Court, Hogg confessed to shouting, swearing, tracking his wife’s movements, and sending alarming and distressing messages. The court heard that he criticized his wife for not joining in drinking binges and bombarded her with over 200 text messages in a few hours. As a result of the bail breach, Hogg was issued a non-harassment order for five years and fined £600 plus a victim surcharge of £40.
Prosecutor, Drew Long, detailed Hogg’s deteriorating behavior towards his wife after the couple moved to Exeter in 2019 with their three young children. Hogg’s actions, including tracking his wife using an app, questioning her whereabouts, and sending excessive text messages, led Mrs. Hogg to seek advice from a domestic abuse service and eventually decide to leave him in 2023.
Despite living abroad and playing for French club Montpellier, Hogg’s legal issues have persisted. The court was informed that Hogg is currently going through a divorce. Hogg had previously retired from professional rugby before signing with Montpellier in July this year. Furthermore, he was recognized for his contributions to the sport with an MBE in the New Year Honours list.
