Michael Joyce, 33, was found guilty of an attack that left Michael White, 61, with fractured ribs and internal injuries. The court heard that Joyce had been holding Mr White “in servitude” and redirecting funds from his bank account, while also subjecting him to regular beatings.
Mr White, described as a kind and gentle man who supported community causes, was found in a distressed state with emaciated body slumped in a shower. Neighbours in the village of Kyle of Lochalsh recounted instances where Mr White would drive Joyce and his partner around and bring them shopping, raising concerns about his wellbeing due to his frail appearance. The court also heard how Mr White’s son, Joshua, discovered the shocking truth about his father’s death after arriving to find the B&B in a state of disarray.
During the trial, it was revealed that Joyce and his partner, Antonia Gunn, faced further charges related to human trafficking and exploitation, including instructing Mr White to transfer money, pay for food shopping, and enter legal proceedings.
