Luke Albiston-O’Donnell’s quick thinking potentially saved the lives of his brothers and sister when he woke his older brother, informing him that his electric bike, charging in the living room, was making a strange noise. Shortly after Luke’s warning, the bike erupted into flames, rapidly spreading through the house on Keele Close, Beechwood Estate in Birkenhead, during the early hours of August 4.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Luke’s siblings Ethan, 20, Harry, 11, and Ava, 10, managed to escape through an upstairs window, but Luke was unable to make it out in time. Emergency services were alerted to the fire, with two fire crews arriving at the scene to find Luke unconscious in the downstairs bathroom. Despite efforts to save him, Luke succumbed to hypoxia and carbon monoxide poisoning at Arrowe Park hospital later that morning.
Luke’s mother, Holly Albiston, expressed her deep sorrow at the loss of her young son at the inquest on December 5, remembering Luke as her “little sidekick” who always had a big smile on his face.
