Scots driver charged after ‘taking hands off wheel’ to snap road crash carnage

A driver in Scotland has been charged after allegedly taking both hands off the wheel while passing a serious road crash in order to capture the carnage on a mobile phone. Police Scotland confirmed that the suspect has been identified and charged with a road traffic offence. The investigation into the incident near the Dreghorn Junction on the Edinburgh City Bypass on November 29, 2024, led to the driver facing charges for their reckless behaviour.

The incident involved a sweeper on the A720 near Dreghorn, resulting in the driver of the sweeper being hospitalized as a precaution. During the emergency response to the crash, officers noticed a motorist driving past the scene with both hands occupied by a mobile phone, causing them to be ‘not in control’ of their vehicle. The police tracked down the individual, who has since been charged with road traffic offences and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

In a statement, Police Scotland emphasized the dangers of such conduct on the road, stating, “This conduct places other road users at risk and will be dealt with robustly.” They also reminded all road users to drive safely and refrain from using their phones while behind the wheel. The decision on whether the driver will face prosecution will be determined after a report is submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The reckless actions of this driver not only endangered themselves but also put other motorists at risk. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible and attentive driving to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. Let this be a cautionary tale of the potential consequences of distracted driving and the significance of adhering to road safety regulations.

My Insights:
It is alarming to see how some individuals prioritize capturing images or videos of tragic events over their own safety and the safety of others on the road. This incident underscores the need for increased awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of staying focused while driving. By highlighting such cases, authorities can send a strong message to deter others from engaging in similar risky behaviours behind the wheel. Let us all strive to promote responsible and safe driving practices for the well-being of everyone on the road.
