Police in Scotland have made significant strides in combating UK-wide gangs that have been terrorizing communities across the country. In a recent crackdown on county lines gangs, officers seized drugs worth £322,000 and a variety of weapons, including an axe and corrosives.
County lines gangs typically operate by sending children or young people to rural areas where they are hidden in the homes of vulnerable individuals, often drug users, in a practice known as “cuckooing.” These young individuals are groomed and coerced by organised criminals who are solely motivated by power and money.
During the crackdown between November 25 and December 1, Police Scotland identified and safeguarded 66 vulnerable people and arrested 81 individuals, including 21 women. The operation also led to the seizure of drugs such as heroin, crack cocaine, cocaine, cannabis, ketamine, and synthetic opioids. Additionally, weapons and a substantial amount of cash were confiscated.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Freeburn emphasized that protecting vulnerable people, especially children and young people, from exploitation by county lines gangs is a top priority for Police Scotland. The collaborative effort with the National Police Chiefs Council resulted in a successful crackdown on these criminal networks.
Furthermore, recent joint operations between Police Scotland and the Met Police in London have targeted groups involved in county lines drugs and organised crime in Aberdeen. This has led to numerous arrests and the confiscation of drugs with a street value of over £207,000.
Justice Secretary Angela Constance commended the efforts of law enforcement in dismantling county lines operations and holding criminals accountable for exploiting vulnerable individuals. She urged the public to report any information or concerns related to county lines activities to the authorities or Crimestoppers anonymously.
