A community celebration of “remembrance and gratitude” is set to take place at Lockerbie’s Tundergarth Parish Church on Saturday, December 21, marking 36 years since the tragic act of terrorism that shook the world. The Dumfries and Galloway church, along with the Air Disaster Remembrance Room and the old kirk ruins, are significant sites at Tundergarth. These locations are known for their connection to the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing in 1988, with thousands visiting to pay respects to the 270 victims, including 11 Lockerbie residents, who lost their lives in the attack.
The special service, organised by the Tundergarth Parish Church, the Lockerbie Air Disaster Remembrance Room, Tundergarth Kirks Trust, and the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Legacy Foundation, will commence at 1pm. The service will feature uplifting performances and verse by local artists, focusing on acknowledging and expressing gratitude for the responders, volunteers, and locals who showed immense service and humanity during and after the tragedy.
As part of the event, a new Wall of Honour display will be unveiled, showcasing the official coats of arms of the responder organisations involved in the aftermath of the attack. First responders are invited to contribute an item representing their organisation to this display, which will become a permanent exhibition at the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Heritage Museum within the Tundergarth Kirk ruins.
The anniversary service aims to remember the lives lost while also honouring the unique bond created by the disaster. It will pay tribute to the exemplary efforts of the townspeople and all those who provided tireless commitment and compassion in the aftermath and subsequent years.
