Scientists at the University of Cambridge have made a groundbreaking discovery by developing a urine test that could potentially detect early signs of lung cancer. Lung cancer is often diagnosed at later stages, making it harder to treat successfully. However, this new test aims to identify lung cancer in its earliest stages, allowing patients to receive treatment sooner and improving their chances of recovery.
The test works by looking for specific proteins released by senescent cells, also known as “zombie” cells, in the lung tissue. These cells, although alive, are unable to grow and divide and can contribute to the development of cancer cells. By detecting these proteins in urine through an injectable sensor, scientists can potentially reveal the presence of cells indicating early pathological changes that may lead to cancer.
Professor Ljiljana Fruk, a researcher involved in the study, explained that the goal was to create a urine test that could identify early signs of cancer months or even years before symptoms become apparent. The test is designed to be a cost-effective and easy-to-use alternative to expensive scans, particularly beneficial for high-risk individuals or those at risk of cancer recurrence.
Funded by Cancer Research UK, the study has shown promising results in mice, and researchers are now eager to progress to clinical trials in humans. The ultimate aim is to develop a kit that can be readily used by hospital lab technicians worldwide, facilitating early cancer detection in various types of cancers.
As lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK, with a significant number of cases diagnosed at later stages, the potential impact of this urine test on improving survival rates and treatment outcomes is substantial.
