Prosecutors have requested protection for a woman who endured a two-year ordeal of abuse at the hands of her boyfriend, as detailed in Hamilton Sheriff Court. The court heard that the woman woke up in a hospital with a black eye, but her boyfriend, Steven Fay, convinced her not to seek medical treatment. Fay, 22, admitted to a series of abusive actions towards the woman at different locations between May 2022 and May 2024, involving physical and verbal abuse, as well as monitoring her social media activities.
The prosecution revealed that there were heated arguments between the couple, one of which led to Fay grabbing his girlfriend by the throat. On a particular night in October 2022, after the woman passed out from alcohol consumption, she woke up in a hospital with a black eye. Despite being urged to seek treatment, Fay persuaded her to leave before receiving medical assistance. On another occasion, police found the woman distressed with a head injury, leading to Fay verbally abusing and attempting to physically assault the officers.
In a separate incident in May 2024, when police responded to a disturbance at the woman’s residence, they discovered Fay hiding under a bed, breaching his bail conditions. Apart from the charges related to domestic abuse, Fay also admitted to assaulting police officers and displaying threatening behaviour towards them. Prosecutors expressed concern over the woman’s safety, emphasizing the recurrent violent behaviour exhibited by Fay.
The court was informed that while the woman maintains contact with Fay and does not support a non-harassment order, the Crown strongly recommended imposing such an order due to the severity of the violence. Fay’s defence lawyer acknowledged his client’s struggle with alcohol and his commitment to abstain from drinking. Sentencing was deferred for background reports and consideration of a non-harassment order, with Fay remaining in custody.
