Storm Darragh chaos sees Met Office issue second ‘danger to life’ Scotland wind warning – Daily Record
Scotland’s east coast is the latest to be issued with another yellow weather warning as the UK braces for Storm Darragh. The Met Office has been promptly warning of hazardous conditions, ranging from snow to rain, that are to bring travel chaos to the country from today (December 6).
While the latest alert covers a smaller part of Scotland, it cautions over potential damaging conditions and adds to a further “danger to life” amber alert of gale force winds that are to blow through the southwest. Scotland’s new wind warning will begin at 6am on Saturday morning (December 7) and last until 6am on Sunday (December 8).
Among its 11 affected areas include Angus, Perth, Aberdeenshire, and East Lothian. It states: “Storm Darragh could bring a period of strong winds to much of the warning area. The strongest winds are likely as the system clears away on Saturday and overnight into early Sunday, when northerly winds may gust to 65 to 70mph. The wind may cause disruption to travel and affect some infrastructure such as power lines.”
Those living within the warning area risk danger to life injuries from large waves and beach material being thrown over coastal roads and properties. There is also the risk of damage to buildings, as well as loss of services from outages, including phone and internet coverage.
This is the fifth weather warning that currently covers Scotland, all of which are forecasting a barrage of miserable weather. It comes as Storm Darragh is to tear its way through the UK, with Wales just being issued the most serious red weather warning for significantly damaging winds.
Met Office Chief Forecaster, Jason Kelly, said: “Although there is a lower likelihood of impacts outside of the red and amber warning areas this doesn’t mean you won’t see them. We are likely to see impacts across the whole of the country, and people should keep an eye on the latest forecast details and prepare for the bad weather, especially if planning to be out and about on Saturday.”
“Some areas are likely to have a relatively quiet start to Saturday, weather-wise, but winds will quickly increase from the west through the day.”
