Work on Perth’s ‘super sewer’, a major infrastructure project in the city, is progressing into its final phase, according to Scottish Water. The £107 million sewer upgrade project includes the installation of a new pipeline along Tay Street and Shore Road to enhance the city’s waste water network and reduce the risk of sewer flooding in low-lying areas between Muirton and the city centre. The final 100 metres section of the ‘super sewer’ is set to begin construction next week, with the project expected to be completed in spring.
The new sewer pipeline, costing £23.2 million and measuring 2.2 metres in diameter, will bolster Perth’s waste water network to accommodate the city’s growth. Despite challenges like exceptionally wet weather conditions during the summer, significant progress has been made on site, with the installation of 380 metres of sewer and completion of five out of seven chambers. Scottish Water senior project manager David Lavery expressed satisfaction with the progress and assured that the team is on track to deliver this crucial upgrade for Perth.
As the project nears completion, traffic management arrangements on Shore Road will change, and access to certain areas will be redirected. Residents, businesses, and road users have been urged to follow diversion signage and remain patient as the improvements are carried out. The project is being delivered in conjunction with Caledonia Water Alliance, and updates can be found on the Scottish Water website.
Local businesses on Shore Road will continue to operate as usual, and pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained, including access to Moncrieffe Island via the railway bridge.
